Intro To Sewing For Beginners 4 Week Course

Basic Sewing Skills – Introduction to basic sewing for beginners.

This is the perfect course if you are completely new to sewing or you havent done it for years and you need a refresher. You will learn how to use a sewing machine to make a range of finished products.

What you will learn:

• Learn about fabrics
• How to layout & cut out basic shapes
• How to use a machine to create different stitches and seams
• How to use different feet on a machine for different purposes
• How to sew and finish seams appropriately
• How to insert a zip
• How to create a button hole & attach a button

Course structure

Week 1.

Introduction to a sewing machine, threading the machine, winding a bobbin, different dials, straight stitch. Cutting fabric to make a fabric tote/book bag. We will learn French seams.

Week 2

Using a template to create a length of bunting, learning to turn to create a neat point, bagging out, top pressing and top stitching.

Week 3

Make a pom-pom cushion. Marking out, adding pop-poms, learning how to create a buttonhole using a buttonhole foot.

Week 4

A block bottom makeup bag or pencil case. Inserting a zip, line a bag and bagging out.

What you will need to bring:
Week 1: everything is included
Week 2: 2 x 30cm strips of cotton fabric, 3 metres of bias binding 
Week 3: 1 x 50cm strip of fabric (front & back) 1.5 metres of matching pom-poms
Week 4: 2 x contrast fat quarters or half metre cotton fabric, 8 inch zip

Knowledge level:

• Suitable for complete beginners and those with limited machine sewing knowledge/skill.
